Barbados' story doesn't start in 1627, the year the first English settlers arrived.
Long before that, Saladoid and later Kalinago peoples lived here. They fished, farmed, crafted pottery and moved between islands by sea 🌊
Portuguese sailors passed by in the early 1500s. The name "Barbados" likely comes from the beard-like aerial roots of the bearded fig trees they saw along the coast, and those trees are still part of the island today 🌳
